Return of firebrand opposition leader Lopez energizes Venezuelan protests

Lopez's appearance alongside National Assembly leader Juan Guaido was enough to convince the 30-year-old computer programmer to join tens of thousands of Venezuelans protesting against President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday. "Our spirits have been low, but when we saw Leopoldo Lopez out on Caracas' streets, it was a signal to again return to the fight," Garcia said, a gas mask hanging from his neck and chunks of concrete stuffed in the pockets of his hoodie. Lopez, 48, oversaw Guaido's rise from student leader and remains a key figure in their Popular Will party. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2ZP126i via Yahoo

Alleged Poway Synagogue Shooter Pleads Not Guilty to All Charges

PoolPOWAY, California—John T. Earnest pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder charges for an attack on a local synagogue that killed one person on Saturday, a crime the district attorney alleged he committed with “terror on his mind.”Earnest, 19, entered court looking sullen and angry but said nothing during the brief arraignment. Dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit, he watched from a glass box as a public defender entered his not-guilty plea. A judge ordered Earnest held without bail as requested by the D.A.’s office, calling him an “obvious and extraordinary risk to public safety and to the community.”Authorities say Earnest entered Chabad of Poway and opened fire with an assault-style rifle during Passover services. He is charged with murdering Lori Kaye, 60. He is also charged with three counts of attempted murder for wounding Noya Dahan, 8, and her uncle, Almog Peretz, 34, who was also hurt while he helped usher children to safety.Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein credited Kaye for saving his life...

Biden attacks Trump and pledges to fix 'broken political system' in first major 2020 campaign rally

Joe Biden has pledged to take on America’s “broken political system" as he hit out at Donald Trump for "abusing the power of office" during his first major campaign speech.Speaking in Pittsburgh, the former vice president said that Mr Trump was more interested in his own hardline supporter base than the rest of America. “With too many people left out or left behind... We’re tearing America apart rather than lifting it up,” he told the crowd, who chanted “we want Joe”.The country was suffering from a “broken political system that’s deliberately being undermined by our president to continue to abuse the power of the office,” Mr Biden added. The choice of Pennsylvania was significant, with Mr Biden acknowledging how crucial the state is to Democrat chances of taking back the White House. “If I’m going to beat Donald Trump in 2020, it’s going to happen here,” he said, adding that the party has “had a little bit of trouble” in the state in 2016. Hillary Clinton lost Pennsylvan...

The New York Times ’ Anti-Semitism Is Shocking, but Not Surprising

This week, the New York Times got itself into hot water for printing a blatantly Jew-hating cartoon in its international edition. The cartoon depicted Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an elongated dachshund, a Star of David hanging around his neck, leading a fat, blind, yarmulke-wearing Donald Trump through the streets. The implication: The nefarious, animalistic Jew is in control of the Jew-perverted president of the United States. The image is nothing new. In 1940, the Lustige Blatter, a weekly German humor magazine, printed an image of a tall, ugly, bearded Hasidic Jew taking a tiny Winston Churchill by the hand and leading him across the surface of the globe. So, what would tempt the New York Times to print an illustration directly from the mind of Julius Streicher? The fact that the Times, like many of today’s mainstream media outlets, has been completely and utterly willing to cover for and, indeed, engage in anti-Semitism, so long as it is disguised as anti-Zionism. Un...

Venezuela: Maduro claims victory over ‘attempted coup’, as Guaido calls for people to take to streets again

Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro has claimed victory over what he described as the “coup-mongering far right”, following a bold challenge by opposition leader Juan Guiado who took to the streets of Caracas with rebels on Tuesday. In an hour-long address on Tuesday night following a day punctured by violent exchanges, Mr Maduro said the opposition had failed to win the support of the military and that Mr Guaido’s attempts at an armed confrontation could be used as a pretext for foreign interference – specifically by Donald Trump’s “imperialist gang”.But Mr Guaidó said Mr Maduro had lost control of the armed forces, and said a peaceful transition of power in Venezuela was underway, as he called for further action on Wednesday. The rebellion was launched by Mr Guiado early on Tuesday morning when he released a video calling for action in a move he called “Operation Freedom”, in which he was flanked by a few dozen national guardsmen and some armoured crowd-control vehicles, near the Carlota air ba...

Measles cases in the U.S. just hit a 25-year high thanks to anti-vaxxers

The United States just hit a major milestone, but not the kind that anyone should be proud of. With over 700 confirmed cases of the measles so far in 2019 the country just passed a 25-year high, and there's little sign that the outbreak is slowing. The spread of the disease -- which thus far has hit unvaccinated children under five years of age the hardest -- would have been absolutely unimaginable just a couple of decades ago. As recently as the year 2000, the United States had effectively eliminated the disease nationwide thanks high percentages of vaccinations, but decades of intense work by health officials to rid us of the disease has been completely undone in seemingly no time at all.The most recent report from the CDC puts the current number of infected individuals at a whopping 704. That's just the confirmed cases, mind you, so the real number is likely significantly higher. Individual outbreaks have popped up in a number of states including New York, Michigan, New Jerse...

Maduro's 'death squads' add a new, terrifying layer of intimidation and violence to the chaos in Venezuela

The first difference I noticed was the FAES. Driving back into Caracas after an absence of more than eight years, a patrolling truck of masked, black-clad agents wielding their arms like warnings was a noticeable – and menacing – addition to the city’s streets.  This feared new unit – known as the Special Actions Force – did not exist when I moved to Venezuela as a correspondent in Hugo Chávez’s heyday more than a decade ago. Security forces were always repressive: I, and most people I know, had numerous run-ins with what Venezuelans refer to as ‘ladrones con placa’ (gangsters with badges) over the years. Even on my first visit in 2004, declaring my profession as journalism on a hotel entry form led to an interrogation by intelligence agents. But the FAES have added a new, terrifying layer of intimidation and violence. Originally created by Nicolas Maduro in 2017 to crack down on "organised crime and terrorism", they have mutated into his enforcers, crushing dissent ...

Cabinet minister makes history as first woman to witness Japan's emperor accession ceremony

Among a sea of men in black tailcoats, there was one guest, dressed in a light silk kimono, who easily stood out during the rituals-steeped accession ceremony for Japan’s new emperor: Satsuki Katayama. As the only female minister in the current government’s cabinet, Katayama, 59, earned herself a place in the history books today as she became the first woman in modern times to officially witness the ceremony. The Regalia Inheritance ceremony, which took place at 10.30am this morning inside the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, is traditionally off limits to all female members of the Imperial family, with neither the incoming nor outgoing empresses attending. Katayama, 59, was the only woman among a small exclusive group of otherwise all-male guests, including representatives of three branches of government and adult male royals in line to the throne who witnessed the historic event, the first stage of Emperor Naruhito’s accession to the throne. During the ceremony, the Imperial chamberlains en...

US says military action 'possible' in Venezuela as Kremlin is told to stop meddling

Donald Trump’s administration has warned Russia to stop meddling in Venezuela and talked up the chance of US military action as a second day of clashes between protesters and security forces played out.  Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, said that military involvement of some form is “possible” as he accused the Kremlin of convincing embattled president Nicolas Maduro to remain in post on Tuesday.  John Bolton, the White House national security adviser, raised the possibility of fresh sanctions as he told Russia publicly that it had no business getting involved in the Venezuelan dispute.  “This is our hemisphere. It's not where the Russians should be interfering. This was a mistake on their part,” Mr Bolton said.  The Kremlin, which is backing Mr Maduro, in turn accused America of being behind an attempted “coup”, calling Washington’s actions a “gross violation of international law”. The US-Russia tensions flared as Juan Guaido, the 35-year-old opposition leade...
